The Best Pancake in Walla Walla
By: Andy Daniels
Since my move to Walla Walla, I was skeptical that I would ever… EVER find a pancake that beats out Sassy Onion in Salem, OR. (more on that in other articles). I must say, I was blown away by one pancake in particular in this city. If you’ve ever been to downtown Walla Walla, its a very cute atmosphere. Loads of small shops, a gourmet cheese closet, and of course, more wineries than the eye can see. But only a short way from main street, housed in a quaint wood structure, sits the incredible gourmet breakfast restaurant, The Maple Counter Cafe.
The Maple Counter is a gem in its own right. Owned and operated by Kory and Rachel Nagler, this restaurant gives the city of Walla Walla a great name. I’m telling you, this place is solid gold! Through their use of only locally sourced ingredients, fresh squeezed juices, and butter that is above USDA 93 score, this place will absolutely DOMINATE your taste buds. They truly believe that there is no real substitute for quality.
Ok people, brace yourselves. It’s about to get crazy delicious up in here!
Readers of Sound Cakes, people of planet Earth, hear ye! I give you… The Apple Pancake! Winner of Sound Cakes Best Pancake of Walla Walla Award! This pancake (pictured above) is labeled as “the pride of our kitchen” on The Maple Counter menu. This apple pancake is made in the tradition of soufflé, which is a rich and fluffy dish, baked using egg yolks and craftily beaten egg whites, blended with other secret ingredients. The pancake is then baked in their oven until it inflates and expands to be at least 3 inches high! (my mouth is watering, yours?) It is then filled with fresh apples (peeled and cut in house), and smothered in a Saigon-cinnamon glaze. To top it off, it’s served with house-made hot apple syrup to drizzle on top.
Ok all, how ya doin? I am literally sitting here in a trance at how beautiful this pancake sounds. And this is only how the pancake SOUNDS!
I tried it for myself a few weeks ago… and my goodness, it is truly a masterpiece. It is an experience for all the senses. My nose was taken back to simpler times as I daydreamed of fresh apple orchards. My eyes were transported to a heavenly oasis of pancake-y goodness. My ears heard nothing but the sweet sound of my fork cutting into the delicate soufflé crust. And my mouth literally gave me a hug from the inside out with how incredible that damn pancake was.
So on behalf of Sound Cakes, and the people of this world who are privileged enough to try this masterpiece of a pancake, I say a heartfelt THANK YOU to The Maple Counter Cafe for gracing the world with this beautiful creation. I can’t wait to have that pancake again, and re-bask in its glory.
The Maple Counter Cafe also has a cool waffle cart open during the warm months of the year, located right next to their restaurant. They serve hand-made gourmet waffles food cart style. They are delicious! Check out their menu for more info.
The Maple Counter Cafe is located at 209 E. Alder St. Walla Walla, Washington 99362.
The restaurant is open daily from 7am-3pm.
